As we countdown to the end of 2019 and look forward to a new decade, a lot has taken place for the past 12 months. Here are some highlights of the year that has been:
After a great 2018, we kicked off 2019 with an early access program implementing for WhatsApp for Business API, to select brands. WhatsApp has over 1.5bn people and is easily the most in-demand channel in business to customer communication.
In February, at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, RCS (Rich Communication Services) Messaging was introduced to the assembled telcos and tech industry players who were keen to. Our CEO, Trevor Kimenye, attended the conference and shared Ongair’s vision to help businesses communicate and support their customers on Messaging.
Freshworks (makers of Freshdesk) had their annual partners conference in March 2019. We participated in the ISV exhibition, as one of the Freshworks partners, showcasing our two apps that enable Freshdesk customers to provide customer support on WeChat and Telegram. It was the first ISV exhibition by Freshdesk at the partner conference. Check out the highlight on this post.
F8 2019, Facebook’s annual developer conference took place in April, in San Francisco. The 2019 theme was ‘Future is Private’. Several highlights of this from a Messaging perspective were the launch of business catalogues in the WhatsApp for Business App and better discovery tools for Messenger pages and experiences.
Google’s annual developer conference, I/O 2019 took place in May 2019. Google announced they would be taking control of RCS (Rich Communication Services) Messaging, the next generation of SMS to be available on its Android platform. While there was no release date mentioned, it would be a great competitor to Apple’s iMessage given the large footprint of Android. The update interested us since Ongair majors on all things messaging for businesses.
Africa Tech Summit London took place in June. Our CEO was part of a contingent of African Tech leaders showcasing African built tech to the world. They got invited to a special opening of the London Stock Exchange.
For Customer Care Week October 7th- 11th, we visited some of our customers and highlighted their magic of service on social media. As it is, courtesy calls ought to be accompanied by goodies. Our marketing team did not disappoint, as they carried Ongair branded swag, together with mouth-watering cupcakes with them. Throughout the week, we appreciated the faces behind the impeccable customer service daily using Ongair.
November 2019 saw the inaugural Facebook developer conference- iD8 held in Nairobi. Our CEO, Trevor Kimenye, spoke at two-panel sessions on the Messenger platform at FB iD8 Nairobi, as we are one of the pioneer businesses to integrate the Facebook messenger for customer service.
We also attended a fireside chat on the new Data Protection Act held at the Lawyers’ Hub. The Data Protection Act of 2019 came into effect on 25th November 2019. Read our takeaways from the fireside chat here.
New home for Ongair in December 2019: It’s been a busy 2019, and we’re ending the year with a move to our new home. We can’t wait to share pictures of where we’re building the future of business and customer messaging with you in the new year.
