Customers are at the core of every business, and your business should celebrate excellence in customer service daily. Nonetheless, the first full week of October is set aside annually, in over 60 countries to celebrate customer service. This year, Customer Service Week is on 7th- 11th October, and we are celebrating ‘The magic of service’.
Customer Service Week is an internationally recognized week devoted to highlighting and recognizing the importance of customer service. It is also the week that gives businesses the opportunity to honour people who are always at the frontline supporting their customers.
Customer service profession
Customer service is a noble profession with the necessary building blocks. As a matter of fact, every employee in a customer-centred business should have these qualities. We have outlined a few of them here:
Patience- when a customer contacts your business with a complaint, they are frustrated with something that is either not working as it should or something that they need to be walked through. One should take the time to understand a customer’s concern. Each customer is a unique individual, who deserves to be handled with patience. Striking a balance between the number of customers you can serve and the quality of service you offer, is a deal-breaker when it comes to customer retention.
Empathy- One needs to be empathetic to a customer, in order to offer great service. Since we are all customers at one point, our experiences as customers would serve as a good yardstick to determine the type of service that we give to customers. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes, and walk-in them- literally. Ask yourself this question: How would I like to be handled in this customer’s situation? “The single most important thing is to make people happy. If you are making people happy, as a side effect, they will be happy to open up their wallets and pay you.- Derek Sivers, Founder, CD Baby.
Attentiveness- Customers feel more appreciated if they feel that a business knows them. If a customer talks to a brand that remembers previous interactions they have had with them before, the better. Customers know when brands are paying attention to them. According to a report by forrester, 66% of adults feel that valuing their time is the most important thing a company can do to provide them with good online customer experience. You can take advantage of CRM tools like Ongair to keep track of a customer’s interaction with your brand, and save on turnaround time.
Emotional Intelligence- EQ is the ability to monitor and control your emotions as well as those of other people. An emotionally intelligent individual has people skills that enable them to maintain their cool in tense situations. Any business with customers is in the “People” business.
