Preparing for a Messenger take over . The Why ? and The How ?

It’s been an exciting past few months for Facebook Messenger, in between reaching a billion users and being the latest platform to support bots, you could say Messenger is well on it’s way to a global takeover. And even through the swamp of Instant Messaging apps available today, Messenger has managed to squarely position itself as one of the biggest and most widely used apps of our time.

How did we get here ? Let’s look at Messenger’s recent developments......

1. End to end encryption

A couple months after WhatsApp introduced End to End encryption. Messenger rolled out their very own version of the feature on the app. While Messenger’s encryption differed from the one released on WhatsApp, the move will definitely go a long way in increasing the level of privacy and security afforded to app users.

One key feature of the Messenger encryption is that it requires users to opt-in, unlike WhatsApp’s full encryption which is default for all users and messages, Messenger’s integration can be turned on and off depending on the user’s specification.

Using a recently debuted “ Secret conversations “ feature, app users can also set a message to disappear after a specified period of time. The secret conversations are also only visible to the sender and reader, not even Facebook, Chatbots or law enforcement agencies can access them

We wanted to make Messenger your primary messaging platform, and while we currently were already using a lot of security to ensure that your messages are safe and confidential, we felt that we needed to go one more extra step with this new mode,” Dave Marcus - VP, Messaging Products.

This encryption will not affect your Messenger account on Ongair, if anything it will enhance it, rest assured we’ve put in measures to ensure that we factor in all security and encryption updates from Facebook.

2. 11, 000 bots and counting.

Just 3 months after Facebook announced that they would begin to support bots, there are now 11,000 bots on the platform. The move which was primarily aimed at increasing business - consumer interaction on Messenger has seen more than “ 23,000 developers sign up to use tools provided by Wit.ai, a Facebook acquisition that automates conversational interactions between users and businesses “.

From banks, restaurants to your local dentist, bots offer a wide variety of features and functionalities. They can respond with GIFs, audio, video, and other files that can help define a brand’s personality.

As you would imagine, we were absolutely thrilled by this news, why ? bots = more businesses using Instant Messaging in their day to day communication with clients. If 3 months can see 11,000 bots developed, imagine what the next few years would hold. But it’s not just bots for business, that are keeping us up at night, we’ve also found some pretty cool ways in which bots can be used at a personal level.

3. 1 billion users

If ever there was a more coveted number in the today’s tech scene, it would be the 1 billion user mark. Few apps have managed to achieve it and the ones that do have to work extra hard to retain it or increase it. Well, this month, Messenger joined this prestigious 1B club, joining the ranks of apps such as WhatsApp, Youtube, Gmail , Microsoft and more.

“ Today we are announcing that more than 1 billion people now use Facebook Messenger every month, making Messenger one of only a handful of apps worldwide that touch so many lives. “ - official company statement.

And the numbers in it’s support are equally astounding : Messenger’s daily usage stands at.

  • 17 billion photos.
  • 1 billion messages passed between people and businesses.
  • 380 million stickers
  • 22 million GIFs.

Sent every single day...now that’s huge.!

We expect that this is not the last we’ll be hearing of Messenger, if anything it might just be the beginning of a global messenger take over, who knows.
